Opioid Reduction Options in the ED

The Opioid Reduction Options (ORO) in the Emergency Department program helps emergency doctors, nurses, pharmacists and care team members treat people’s pain while reducing the risk of opioid addiction. This toolkit was designed to support the hospital team in engaging patients in this conversation. While opioids are still available if they’re medically necessary, they’re not always the first – or best – option to help patients with pain management.

On-Demand Course: ORO 2.0 - Moving the Needle

With the U.S. opioid epidemic moving into a fourth decade, healthcare professionals continue to take on the challenge and formulate best practices in pain management. This course explores the current state of the opioid crisis, non-opioid treatment strategies and recommendations for opioid reduction, with an emphasis on marginalized communities and maternal infant health. https://education.njha.com/courses/46383

ORO: You Have Options for Pain Management

ORO in the ED is made possible in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Health, the New Jersey Department of Human Services and St. Joseph’s Health.

Promoting Health Equity

Health inequities can contribute to increased risk for negative health outcomes and overdosing, especially among marginalized groups. By applying a health equity lens for populations at risk for biased treatment in the health-care system, which may include women and non-gender confirming sexual minorities, institutionalized persons, the disabled, the elderly, non-native English speakers and undocumented residents, leaders are able to use data to inform meaningful shared learning and practice change as a bridge between medicine and public health.

Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

The impact of opioid use by women of child-bearing age has reached epidemic proportions. The Neonatal Abstinence Consensus Initiative defines 10 priority areas with accompanying action steps to promote screening and referral services for women and children. The goal is to enact local policies and practices based in evidence to drive safe patient outcomes and quality care.

VaPE Toolkit

Vape Chart PosterE-cigarette use, or vaping, is emerging as a serious health risk, but the full extent of this public health threat remains unknown. The New Jersey Hospital Association urges the provider community to become partners in identifying e-cigarette or vaping use and building a foundation of reliable data to gauge this threat in our communities. This resource provides guidance to ensure the proper capture and documentation of e-cigarette, or vaping use data. Verifying a potential exposure (VaPE) is an essential part of addressing the threat and protecting the health of the people of New Jersey.
