The United States recently experienced a nationwide outbreak of enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) associated with severe respiratory illness.
Most states, including New Jersey, had confirmed cases of enterovirus. While enteroviruses are common, the particular strain has caused severe respiratory distress in some children, especially those with existing respiratory ailments such as asthma. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention prioritized testing of specimens from children with severe respiratory illness. There are likely many children affected with milder forms of illness.
