June 8, 2023: Statement of Cathy Bennett, President and CEO, on Unhealthy Air Quality

New Jersey remains under a blanket of unhealthy air from the wildfires in Canada. Another fire is burning in the New Jersey Pinelands, although that impact is much more localized. We must reiterate the health alert issued by Gov. Murphy and N.J. Department of Environmental Protection – the air quality is unhealthy for certain sensitive populations including the elderly, the very young and those with underlying respiratory conditions. Some hospitals, especially in the northern part of the state, report an increased number of respiratory cases among patients in the emergency room. As the air conditions persist, we remain concerned for those with respiratory illnesses and other chronic conditions, as well as those living and working in urban communities. We urge New Jerseyans to continue heeding the warnings to stay indoors with windows closed to minimize the health risk.
