The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced today that it has confirmed the second case of MERS-CoV infection in the United States.

The new case was described as an “imported” case infecting a Florida resident. Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS-CoV, is a virus relatively new to humans and was first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012. CDC reported the first case of MERS in the United States May 2.

Most people who have been confirmed to have MERS-CoV infection developed severe acute respiratory illness. They had fever, cough and shortness of breath. More than 30 percent of these individuals died, according to the CDC.
