Maternal Hemorrhage

Harm Reduction Hemorrhage Graphic

Postpartum hemorrhage causes approximately 11 percent of maternal deaths nationally and is the leading cause of death that occurs on the day of birth. Importantly, a large proportion of maternal deaths due to obstetric hemorrhage may be preventable. Fifty women out of every 1,000 in New Jersey experienced maternal hemorrhage during their delivery, according to 2019 data from the state’s maternal health report card. The rate is even higher for Black (60.6) and Hispanic women (53.2). Excessive bleeding postpartum is a critical symptom; the resources below help patients and their support teams recognize the symptoms of maternal hemorrhage.
